June 14, 2026 - Twenty-two Puerto Rican veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War participated this weekend in an "Honor Flight" or Flight of Honor to Washington, D.C., organized by the nonprofit Honor Flight Network and sponsored by the PenFed Foundation for Military Heroes. The group traveled June 12-14 and visited national monuments and memorials dedicated in their honor (adapted the islanewspr.com, on June 14, 2026).
The Honor Flight Network has transported more than 339,226 veterans to Washington free of charge to honor their service and offer them the opportunity to see monuments built in their recognition (adapted by the islanewspr.com, on June 14, 2026). Felix Fussa American Legion Post 67 (Rincon Inc.) Vietnam veteran José Moreno and his escort Tania Soto, commander of Post 67, were amongst the veterans to travel to Washington this year.
This once-in-a-lifetime experience left Moreno full of emotions, not only for being recognized and welcomed home, but for allowing him the opportunity to share with other Puerto Rican veterans.
“I want to thank Anibal Gonzalez Mictil, senior manager of PenFed, or coordinating this last-minute flight, which allowed our post to send a Vietnam veteran from the Westcoast of the island of Puerto Rico," said Soto. “We also recognize Haley Foster, director of the Lone Eagle Program, for her support in making this dream a reality.”
