John J. Morris Post 62 celebrates America's 250th birthday

Peoria, AZ

On July 4, John J. Morris Post 62 (Peoria, Ariz.) joined the nation in celebrating America's 250th birthday. The event started with 20 American Legion Riders rolling in to a round of applause. The color guard was summoned front and center. They had the rifle team salute the posted colors. At this point in the Arizona heat, the ceremonies moved inside. The chaplain gave the invocation followed by the Auxiliary Juniors leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Noah McMullen gave the opening remarks followed by the Auxiliary, Riders and SAL. The chaplain gave the benediction. The Sun City Poms put on a dance performance to patriotic songs. This was followed by distributing free T-shirts to the attendees and then the potluck dinner, with the post providing hot dogs, hamburgers and brisket for everyone to eat. As usual, the Post 62 potluck featured two amazing dessert tables! Following lunch, the band Reboot played music for the next five hours of dancing. During the band the Juniors were hard at work again, this time painting rocks and putting patriotic sayings on them and then distributing them around the social quarters for people to find and keep. Did I mention there was a Luke AFB flyover? They were going somewhere else but went straight past the post. Happy 250th, America!
