The Post 62 honor guard (HG) was honored to celebrate and commemorate the life of George Sabin Clig, who was born on Sept. 14, 1933. George’s family were immigrants from Romania.
George enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served four years of active duty during the Korean War. During his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Shortly after completing his military service, George joined The American Legion in Detroit, where he remained an active member throughout his life. The foundation established during his four years in uniform led to a long career in government service. George ultimately retired as a GS-11 with the Navy at Point Mugu Naval Air Station in California.
The HG was honored to provide military funeral honors for George. The colors were posted and later retired. The American flag was carefully folded by captain Barney Beckland and member Cindy Towner, while the chaplain read "The Meaning of the 13 Folds of the American Flag" during each fold. The completed folded flag was then presented to George’s family as a symbol of our nation’s gratitude for his service.
The HG was also requested to present George’s ashes to the American Legion Riders, who would carry them to the cemetery while leading the family and friends in procession. Towner volunteered to deliver the ashes.
It was a humbling honor and privilege to deliver George’s ashes for the final ride to the cemetery and be part of honoring a veteran, Legionnaire and American who dedicated much of his life to serving his country and community.
