Legionnaire attends burial ceremony at United Nations Cemetery at Busan, South Korea

Legionnaire Steve Tharp, service officer of Col. Lewis Millet American Legion Post 38 on South Korea, on Nov. 14, 2025, attended Chief Warrant Officer Four (Retired) Joseph C, Shepard’s burial ceremony at the United Nations Cemetery at Busan, South Korea. CW4(R) Shepard served 40 years on active duty with the U.S. Army and served another 21 years as a Department of the Army civilian servant. Shepard was a Korean War and Vietnam War veteran. He was the last-known U.S. Korean War veteran living in South Korea. Tharp laid a white chrysanthemum at Shepard’s grave during the ceremony. The cemetery in Busan contains 2,300 graves and is the only United Nations cemetery in the world. Laid out over 35 acres, the graves are set out in 22 sites designated by the nationalities of the buried servicemembers.
