In the wake of the severe flooding that struck Central Texas shortly after the July 4 celebrations, two cornerstone veterans' organizations - Highland Lakes VFW Post 6974 and American Legion Post 974 - joined forces to provide critical assistance and recovery support to the affected communities. Their coordinated efforts have demonstrated the power of local leadership, unity among veterans, and a shared commitment to service beyond the battlefield.
On July 6, 2025, historic rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Central Texas, particularly impacting the Highland Lakes area. Homes, businesses and infrastructure suffered significant damage, displacing hundreds of residents and leaving many in need of immediate assistance.
A joint command center was established at the VFW hall, with representatives from both posts coordinating relief logistics. Members were deployed to assist with clean up, transportation of supplies, and home safety checks for elderly and disabled residents.
Household supplies, food and meals were distributed to the community who were affected by the floods. Teams were assembled and went into the community to help with cleanup. The Legion has assembled a team that will be going out to homes in the community to continue with the cleanup and reconstruction of homes that were damaged by the floods.
Recognizing the urgent need for community action, the Highland Lakes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6974 and Patrick M. Goble American Legion Post 974 both quickly mobilized members and volunteers to assess community needs. Over 10,000 hot meals have been served or distributed within a week's time. Also, truckloads of household goods and cleaning supplies along with non-perishable foods have been distributed to the community as well.
Relief efforts will continue for as long as needed. Meals will continue to be distributed daily as well as the distribution of household goods. Teams will be assembled to go into the community to continue with help of cleanup and construction of damaged houses and businesses.
Post 974 was established in June 2024, to expand the outreach to all veterans in the Highland Lakes area of Central Texas.
