SAN ANTONIO – (Aug. 13, 2025) – On Aug. 1, Jackie J. Mixon-Johnson, of Mico, Texas, was certified to serve on the Audie L. Murphy Veterans’ Hospital Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Committee by the Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission.
Mixon-Johnson, an U.S. Army and Air Force veteran, is currently the veterans service officer of Mico American Legion Post 380. She has been volunteering at the veterans hospital for two years.
When asked why she volunteers, she simply stated, “Because it helps veterans in need.”
The Audie L. Murphy Veterans’ Hospital, located in San Antonio, has long been recognized as a beacon of medical care and support for U.S. veterans in South Texas.
Central to its mission of providing comprehensive care and fostering community engagement is the VAVS Committee, a group dedicated to coordinating, supporting and expanding the reach of volunteer efforts for the benefit of veterans and their families.
What does Mixon-Johnson look to bring as a member of the Audie L. Murphy VAVS Committee?
“A sense of desire toward helping the system help veterans, without expecting financial compensation,” she said. “And to provide valuable input and feedback to help the veterans health-care system in its mission to care for those who have served this country.”
The American Legion has supported and actively participated in the VAVS program since it began in 1946. Today, nearly 7,000 volunteers serve 900,000 hours annually at various VA medical centers, community-based outpatient centers, Vet Centers, nursing homes, state veterans homes and other facilities that support hospitalized veterans.
