Bayonet Fighting

In June 1964, I was taking basic training at Ft. Polk, LA. A Drill Sergent was demonstrating bayonet fighting. The whole process seemed very risky to me. He concluded by saying that if your bayonet got stuck, to fire a round and that it would propel out.

He asked if there were any questions. A brave recruit raised his hand and was acknowledged. He loudly stated, "Hey Sarge, If I got one bullet in my rifle, there ain't going to be no bayonet fighting!"

I had no idea I could do five laps around a track field with my rifle over my head.
