Cleaning my M-1 rifle

In 1961 I was at Fort Knox, Ky for basic training. About six weeks into the training we were getting leave on base. First we had to pass an inspection with our rifles. When the Sergeant looked at my rifle, he said "Go back clean that dirty rifle Cruit". I went back to the barracks and laid on my bed. The other guys said that I better clean my rifle or no leave. I told them my rifle was clean and I was not going do it again. We went back to the formation and when the sergeant came to me and I opened the breach of the M-1 and he said "nice job Cruit" and I went on leave. I cleaned rifles before the Army.
