In Cresco, Iowa, American Legion Post 135 conducted a flag placement program with a local Cub Scout pack, sold 250th-anniversary shirts, and planned a special event for July 4 that included coloring and patriotic puzzle contests, a free pork loin lunch and evening parade. Following the parade, the post invited the public to stop by for ice cream and root beer floats.
According to former post commander Dodd Franklin, it got so busy after the parade that the event's photographer and even the newspaper editor stopped taking photos and helped serve floats. For the parade itself, the post ordered three colonial uniforms to wear instead of their normal Legion uniforms; their entry was voted People's Choice.
