1989 I went to One Station unit training at Ft. Knox, Ky. where I became an Armor crewman on the M-1 Abrams tank. I arrived mid-September and the weather was nice at the time, but by the time I graduated mid-December there was snow and ice. The weather made it challenging to be on a tank because the steel would ice up and it was very easy to slip. To add to the fun, when we took the tanks out the field they would get very muddy and it was always fun cleaning them. My main challenge was passing the p.t. test and I passed it but not until after my Drill Sgt. told me that if I didn't pass I would have to stay at Ft. Knox through Christmas and that is not what I wanted. I graduated 2 days before the Panama invasion.
