The importance of mental exercise

A Veteran’s Perspective on Staying Mentally Active

Hello, I’m Robert Davis, an Army veteran who served from 1962 to 1965. For the past 30 years, I have been a proud member of The American Legion. Now, at 80, I continue to work part-time as a graphic artist and devote time to writing poetry. It was only recently that I paused to recognize my age and realized the importance of slowing down.
As I looked at my friends and fellow veterans, I noticed that many were not actively engaging their minds. This observation led me to reflect on my own family’s experiences. I witnessed my grandmother and uncle succumb to dementia, reaching a point in life where memories were all they had left. Sadly, I saw how people in this situation often withdraw from conversations and society, sometimes ignored by their families, and may eventually end up in nursing homes, where their lives quietly fade away.
While this is a fate many might face, I am determined not to let it be mine. I cherish the memories of my married life, my family and my time in the military, even though some memories are bittersweet. They are part of who I am, and I hold on to them dearly. If sharing my advice helps even a few people avoid the devastating effects of dementia, Alzheimer’s or memory loss associated with Parkinson’s, by adding a few more memorable years I will feel that I have fulfilled my purpose God had chosen for me.

Ways to Keep Your Mind Active
Exercise your mind every day! I personally do this by writing poetry and stories, which are enjoyable to create and share. I encourage you to share your writing with family and friends, and even at nursing homes, schools, churches or public readings. Any activity that keeps your mind engaged is worthwhile. Consider joining a book club to discuss books and authors with others, or take up painting. Participating in gaming clubs, playing cards, chess or dominoes can also stimulate your mind and provide opportunities to strategize and compete.
A simple message: Always remember the three important words - STAY MENTALLY ACTIVE!
Perhaps we will meet at a Legion event and I will have the pleasure of hearing your stories!

Thank you for your time.

Robert Davis (Ardy)
