June 2023: American Legion Post 90 of Cape Coral won six awards and an honorable mention: 100%+1 membership, Runner-up Best Post Four Chaplains Memorial Service, Runner-up Best Post Public Relations Program, Best Post Shooting Sports Program, Outstanding Post Scouting Program, and Best Post JROTC Program.
However, the most prestigious award was given to John Baker as Department Legionnaire of the Year. John, the second vice commander for Post 90, has held every executive position in the post and led very successful fundraisers, including a poppy donation drive that raised $10,000 for disabled veterans. Remarkably, this is the second year in a row a Post 90 member received the Department Legionnaire of the Year Award; in 2022, post PR officer Ted Clark also received this prestigious award.
The American Legion Department of Florida has over 130,000 members, with more than 300 Legion posts statewide, making the award even more impressive given that it was earned back-to-back by the same post.
American Legion Post 90 was founded in April 2001. The post offers a full canteen and food service at Southeast 47th Street in Cape Coral. It sponsors scholarships, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, Boys and Girls State programs, blood drives, VA volunteers, JROTC shooting teams, charity drives for veterans and local charities, and national emergency funds programs to assist needy veterans.
