Three Generations of Service Quilt

Bolivia, NC

I wanted to do something special for my husband, Staff Sgt. Dennis Krueger's 75th birthday and our 50th wedding anniversary, so I designed and had a quilt made from his grandfather, Pvt. Henry Krueger's WWI army uniform, his father, Sgt. Loran Krueger's WWII Army uniform, and his own Vietnam Air Force uniform. I had all their hats cut in half and embroidered with their name, rank, war and branch of service with their pictures placed above. I also had hats placed in the corners of the quilt and embroidered with Honor, Duty, Courage and Love of Country. I had one picture taken in 1967 of all three of them in their uniforms and I had a hat embroidered with "Thank You for Your Service" placed above that picture. It took 13 months to complete the quilt. Ken Skelps did the pictures, Cynthia Amicone did the embroidery work and Penny Sillery helped with the design and made the quilt. I felt it was a shame to have these uniforms sitting in a trunk all these years and wanted to make a family heirloom piece out of them. I think I succeeded. My husband was thrilled with the quilt, and it has a place of honor on the wall in his office.
