'Not a dry eye in the room'

Santa Fe, NM

I grew up knowing about the Marine Corps. My father was a member of the 5th Regiment in France during World War I. He fought at Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry and other engagements.

I attended the University of New Mexico, where I majored in Spanish, played football and served four years in the NROTC. It was, in fact, a reserve unit, subject to be called to active duty when necessary, at the pleasure of the Navy. When commissioned, I selected to become a Marine. On Nov. 10, 1953, the Marine Corps birthday, the Marine colonel of our unit invited my dad to the cake ceremony. Because of his service, and after some laudatory remarks, the colonel handed my dad the sword to cut the cake. I can tell you, there was not a dry eye in the room, especially me!

I had an eight-year commitment in the Marine Corps, but only two years on active duty. I served six months at Quantico and the rest of my time at Twentynine Palms, Calif. I was assigned to an anti-aircraft battalion.

After my time in the Marine Corps, I belonged to many activities in Santa Fe, including serving as chairman of a bank board. I also owned an office supply company and was national president of the National Office Products Association.
