The Hammondsport American Legion held its annual Memorial Day Services on May 29, 2023, starting at the Veteran’s Honor Roll Memorial in the town square. Veteran Ann Covell placed the wreath at the memorial. This was followed by a small parade to Main Street Cemetery.
Luther Perkins, Hammondsport’s eldest veteran, was a guest of honor and rode in the Army Jeep to the cemetery. Post 407 Commander JP Oliver led the services by welcoming the community and guests. Chaplain Christopher Reneau led the services with a prayer and the Scouts did a reading of “In Flanders Field.” After that, guest speaker Covell delivered a speech about Memorial Day. The Hammondsport Central School High School Band then played patriotic songs, Covell placed a wreath, and the Legion color guard did a salute.
The ceremony was concluded with the band sounding taps. After concluding the services, the community was invited to Post 407 for light refreshments.
The Hammondsport American Legion thanks the members, community and guests for helping and attending the annual Memorial Day Services.
