The journey home for X-3, Sitka's Unknown Soldier, began on June 22 when the dedicated team from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) arrived in Sitka, Alaska. Their mission is among our nation's most honorable. Through extensive research, painstaking excavation, forensic science and countless hours of labor, these remarkable teams work to fulfill America's promise that no servicemember will ever be forgotten.
During their stay, Henry "Gene" Burton Sr. Memorial American Legion Post 13 had the privilege of hosting the DPAA team for dinner. It gave us an opportunity to thank them and gain a deeper appreciation for the planning, expertise and commitment required to carry out a mission of this magnitude. Every recovery involves archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, military personnel, civilian professionals and volunteers working together, often with no guarantee of success.
After a week of tireless work, the team successfully recovered the remains known as X-3.
On June 29, members of The American Legion, Sitka Fire Department, Sitka Police Department, United States Coast Guard, Sitka National Cemetery, Prewitt Funeral Home and DPAA participated in the Dignified Transfer. The flag-draped transfer case was moved with solemn precision, honoring a fallen American with the dignity and respect earned through service.
The journey continued July 1 as the community gathered once again. Veterans, active-duty servicemembers, first responders, families and citizens stood together in silent tribute as X-3 departed for the next stage of identification. It was a powerful reminder that honoring those who sacrificed everything unites us beyond our differences.
The scientific process ahead is meticulous, involving DNA analysis, forensic anthropology and historical research. Though it may take time, we eagerly await the day X-3 is once again known by name and welcomed home by family.
As commander of Post 13, I am incredibly proud of our community. Thank you to the DPAA, every participating organization and every citizen who stood in quiet respect.
Until every servicemember is accounted for, the mission continues.
Welcome home, X-3. May your journey lead you to your name, your family and the honor you have always deserved.
