This spring (2021) the state Department of Education did a presentation at our department spring conference. The initiative was called "Flag in Every Classroom." Post 17 took it on, going to schools in Red Lodge, Roberts and Joliet, all along Hwy 212, our main road between Red Lodge and Billings. Each school checked their rooms and gave us the number of flags needed. We ordered over 60 2' X 3" flag kits from Emblem Sales. The Carbon County News put articles and two ads in the paper. We received three generous donations and placed plaques in Red Lodge and Roberts schools with the project, post and donor's name. We also ordered about 200 Flag Etiquette booklets to donate to the schools.,
At the same time, members who drive 212 were commenting about the large number of tattered flags being displayed. So we put ads and another article in the CCNews asking anyone to contact us for a free 3'x5' or 4'x6' flag. We ordered 15 3 x 5 and five 4 x 6 flags and delivered some of them. The interesting outcome was that so many people replaced their tattered flags with new ones they purchased before the Fourth of July.
Finally, my son has a "bucket truck" with a 40' boom. He let the post use it and we repainted the flag pole at the Elks Club where we hold our meetings, replaced the hardware and rope. Then did the same for the flagpole at the Red Lodge Cemetery in the veterans section. Finally, for an individual whose home is on a hill overlooking Cooney State Park, lake and recreation area.
