As a first-generation Ukrainian-American, I had a strong desire to serve my country - especially after hearing stories from my parents of their fight to protect their country of birth from communist forces, and after my brother enlisted in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. Upon graduating from university and being hired by the federal government, I learned of opportunities to receive a direct commission in the Navy Reserve while still working. I feel honored and blessed to have served my country.
