A Salute to the Veterans

A salute to the Veterans
Heroes all
They made a big sacrifice
And went off to war,
They served their country
Giving their all
Some came home with Post Traumatic Stress
Some came home very depressed,
Some came home missing a limb,
Many came home and never spoke
Of what they saw,
They returned to civilian life,
Many married and together with their wife
Raised a family, devoted their life to
Family and their work,
Then one day, when age crept up
What they endured during the war
Comes back to seize their health in later years,
The VA is of no help at all,
The government has forgotten all about these
Men and women,
But we the average Americans,
We did not forget,
For our Dads, our Uncles, our Grandfathers
Our Brothers and our Cousins
All served this land,
So a salute to the Veterans,
Who have served so gallantly.

Celine Rose Mariotti is an author and poet from Connecticut. Her work is published in many journals and magazines across the USA, in the UK, India, Romania, Australia, Canada and Germany. Some of her books are: "Olivia MacAllister, Who Are You?"; "I Have a Friend on Jupiter"; "Atomic Soldiers"; "I'm Too Young to be President"; "All the Things and People I Love"; "Razzle Dazzle" and many more. She lives at home with her family. Celine plays the guitar, the banjo and the mandolin. She loves to read and watch daytime soap operas. Her dad, Peter J. Mariotti, was a Korean War veteran. He was with the 1st Cavalry, 7th Regiment and fought in Puson and Taegu. He was wounded in Taegu and received the Purple Heart. Her uncle, Dominic Louis Iannotti, was in the 612th Tank Destroyer Unit in World War II. He was there on the sixth day of Normandy. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken prisoner. Six months later he escaped the prison camp and followed the American artillery to get back to the American lines. Both her dad and uncle are with the Angels in Heaven, but old soldiers never die.
