On March 29, American Legion Post 436 in Angier, N.C., partnered with a local high school senior in organizing a Be the One 5K Run/Walk for awareness of veteran suicide. Nine months prior to the event, the post's Auxiliary unit had sponsored the student for ALANC Girls State. Until that time she had no knowledge of the American Legion Family or their respective missions. Upon completion of the program, she was passionate that she wanted to somehow give back to the veterans. Following recommendation of the unit president, a dual member, she joined the unit and began exploring resources on their websites, seeking an opportunity for hosting a community Be the One event. Post 436 and Unit 436 are among the smallest ones in the department, so the challenge initially appeared daunting. She was determined and continued to persevere. While also working on completing her Girl Scout Gold Award, she obtained support from the local Girl Scout council. All teaming together with the high school, local church and civic organizations, the event registered over 150 participants. Led by Post 436 in a greeting on behalf of the BTO initiative and followed by a veterans lap, the event had a tremendous impact on BTO awareness within the community. Plans are already underway for organizing the event next year as a fundraiser for Be the One.
