I chose the Navy with aspirations to become a dentist. On Nov. 4, 1979, the hostages were taken in Iran. On Dec 29, 1979, I enlisted. I was a dental technician aboard USS Dixon AS 37. I was told that this particular ship, a submarine tender, didn't move. Well, that was not true. Before we deployed, JAG officers came aboard the ship to let us know and to guide us on making a will. I had just turned 19.
I stayed in the Navy and Navy Reserve for 12 years. I was 3x6, and upon my separation from active duty, I remained in the reserve. I must say, it was one of the best decisions of my life.
