'Among the proudest achievements of my life'

Sydney, Australia, OT

Although my father, stepfather, and brother all served in different branches, it was my older brother, Joe Ramos, who really motivated this young high school student to want to be a proud Marine, just like him. I began the process of learning as much as I could by visiting the local recruiter's office and reading through pamphlets and watching training videos.

When I entered basic training at Parris Island in 1995 and began learning the true meaning of honor, courage, commitment, teamwork, and discipline, I knew joining the Marine Corps was the right choice for me. Reflecting back all these years later and knowing what I know now, I wish I had made a career out of it. Putting on that uniform and serving my country was among the proudest achievements in my life. I now hope to contribute years of service to the veteran community, and The American Legion allows me to do just that, even while overseas.

Michael Ramos, adjutant, American Legion Post AU01, Sydney, Australia
