In spring of 1964, when I was a senior in Campbellsport High School, four recruiters came to talk to us boys about joining the military. I knew nothing about the military. They talked about what we could expect, and I remember how the Marine recruiter impressed me the most. He wore his dress blues with all his medals, his stripes, hash marks, his white gloves and his overall appearance. That was the day I decided I would someday be a Marine and then I joined a year later. In boot camp I wondered if I had done the right thing, but it was a good experience.
