In the heart of Willis, Texas, there stands a community of patriots with a passion for service and a legacy rooted in compassion. For the past 40 years, C.M. Joslin Post 618 of The American Legion, alongside its dedicated Auxiliary and Sons of The American Legion (SAL) members, has championed a cause close to their hearts — supporting the Shriners Children's Hospital. Through their annual Shriners Chili Cook-Off, this post has not only raised over $525,022.54 in donations but has also become a symbol of unwavering generosity and commitment to children’s health.
A Tradition of Giving: the story of this remarkable tradition began in the mid-1980s, when Post 618 first envisioned a community fundraiser that would unite local families, veterans and businesses around a shared mission: helping children in need of medical care. What started as a modest cook-off has now become one of the most anticipated charitable events in the region — a vibrant celebration of food, fun and fellowship, all for a noble cause.
For four decades, this event has endured through storms, challenges and changing times, yet the core purpose has remained the same: to raise funds and awareness for the life-changing work being done at Shriners Children's Hospital. Whether it’s providing orthopedic care, spinal cord injury treatment, burn recovery or specialized surgeries, Shriners Hospitals serve children from around the world — always regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
Over Half a Million Dollars Raised: Reaching the incredible milestone of over half a million dollars in total donations is no small feat. Every dollar raised at this event has helped fuel the hospital's mission — turning pain into healing, fear into hope and tears into joy. The contributions have helped provide mobility aids, surgeries, physical therapy and prosthetic limbs to children who otherwise may not have access to such critical care.
This success is not the result of a single effort but the collective energy of an entire community. Through the years, volunteers have shown up in droves — setting up tents, serving food, coordinating raffles and cooking award-winning chili. Local businesses, civic leaders and veterans have worked hand-in-hand to support the post’s vision, demonstrating the strength of unity when people come together for the good of others.
Support from Local Champions: Key to the ongoing success of the Chili Cook-Off has been the incredible backing of local partners.
