Texas District 20 service officer to join Audie L. Murphy Veterans’ Hospital VAVS Committee

San Antonio, TX

SAN ANTONIO – (Aug. 20, 2025) – On Aug. 15, Billy Hill of Chicago was certified to serve as a deputy representative on the Audie L. Murphy Veterans’ Hospital Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Committee by the Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Commission.

Hill, a U.S. Navy veteran and first vice commander of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828, is currently the veterans service officer of District 20, Department of Texas.

“District 20 has begun its push for more volunteers and getting the word out across the 3rd Division,” said Hill, who also serves as the district’s training officer. “Our service officers have been introduced, and we hope to strengthen this program through their active participation.”

Central to its mission of providing comprehensive care and fostering community engagement is the VAVS Committee, a group dedicated to coordinating, supporting and expanding the reach of volunteer efforts for the benefit of veterans and their families.

The American Legion has supported and actively participated in the VAVS program since it began in 1946. Today, nearly 7,000 volunteers serve 900,000 hours annually at various VA medical centers, community-based outpatient centers, Vet Centers, nursing homes, state veterans homes and other facilities that support hospitalized veterans.
