Why I chose the Navy

San Diego, CA

Since childhood, I had wanted to serve our nation. My ancestors have fought for and served the United States since the Revolutionary War, and I felt an irrepressible duty to continue our family legacy. Several of my early mentors and idols were veterans; they were honorable men who were present for historic events like Pearl Harbor and D-Day, and I wanted to emulate them.

Why I specifically chose the Navy was a matter of happenstance. Perhaps it's because the Navy and I share a birthday (the same month and day, not the year). Perhaps it's because I was just a few pounds too heavy for the Coast Guard but just right for the Fleet.

Regardless, I am glad I chose the Navy path. I've had the opportunity to serve our country, to be part of historic events (including the 2011 WESTPAC onboard USS Carl Vinson for the Bin Laden incident), to make lifelong friendships and to create a great life for my family.

God bless fellow veterans, The American Legion, the Navy and these United States! #Navy250
