Bravo Zulu: Lt. Owen Fish Memorial Post 143 honors birthdays of Army, Navy and Marine Corps

Lt. Owen Fish Memorial Post 143 hosted a memorable 250th Birthday Ball on Oct. 25, paying tribute to the enduring legacies of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. This milestone celebration honored the birthdays of these branches and highlighted 250 years of dedicated service and American patriotism. We brought together local VSOs including Legion Post 74, VFW Post 9427 and Port 5 NANV.

Over 160 Legionnaires, veterans, active-duty members, families and community supporters gathered at the Gaelic American Club in Fairfield, Conn. Attendees wore dress uniforms, mess dresses and formal attire. The venue was transformed into a patriotic showcase with vibrant red, white and blue decorations draping the walls and tables. A missing man table was prominently displayed in front of the American and service flags, serving as a poignant reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The evening began with cocktails, followed by dinner. The ceremony, modeled after the Marine Corps ball, commenced with a dignified Posting of the Colors by a joint honor guard, the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation. The cake was processed in, and Post Commander Chris DeWitt cut it with his sword, presenting the first piece to guest of honor Capt. Larry Wallace, USN, commander of the Defense Contract Management Agency. Continuing the tradition, representatives of the oldest from each branch passed the first pieces to those representing the youngest. Wallace delivered an inspiring keynote on the meaning of service and sacrifice, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal spoke passionately in support of serving the country and honoring veterans, and DeWitt shared some final remarks. The ceremony concluded with everyone singing along to the service songs. The Lustre Kings band provided classic Americana rock and roll music as veterans shared personal stories, and dancing continued into the evening. Memorable moments included veterans exchanging stories, the ceremonial cake-cutting with a sword, and enthusiastic branch cheers of "Semper Fi," "Hooyah" and "Hooah!"

The event sparked new friendships and strengthened old ones, Importantly, it united the local VSOs - which highlighted that we serve the community better when we are together.

Bravo Zulu to the organizers and volunteers. Gatherings like this reinforce The American Legion's mission: Veterans Strengthening America.
