John J. Morris Post 62 Riders honor 81st Anniversary of Iwo Jima victory

Peoria, AZ

On Feb. 21st the John J. Morris Post 62, Peoria, AZ, traveled to Sacaton Arizona for the 81st Anniversary of the Iwo Jima victory. Sacaton was home to Native American Ira H. Hayes, Marine, who helped raise the flag. On Gila River reservation they had a large parade with entries from across the country. The street was lined full of spectators honoring the tribes in the parade and all the different Marine Corps groups. There were 16 from the Post 62 Riders in attendance taking in the event. Assistant Director Larry Tank, Marine, was impressed with event but saddened to see that American Legion Post 84, named after Ira H. Hayes, was in such sad condition as a single wide trailer in need of repair. He went back to Post 62 with the message that we need to find a way to help them build up such a proud Post. If Larry takes on a mission, it will probably eventually come to be. A salute to Post 62 Riders, Ira H. Hayes Post 84 and the celebration of the victory at Iwo Jima.
