The American Legion Department of Hawaii proudly participated in the annual National Vietnam Veterans Day Parade held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Waikiki. The parade, conducted each year on or around March 29 in recognition of National Vietnam Veterans Day, serves as a heartfelt “welcome home” tribute to Vietnam veterans and their families.
This year’s parade began at 6 p.m. along Kalakaua Avenue, proceeding past the Honolulu Zoo and concluding at Kapiolani Park. The event brought together Vietnam veterans, veterans service organizations, active-duty military units, marching bands and community groups. The parade highlighted Hawaii’s historic role as a critical Pacific gateway for troops - often the last American soil servicemembers saw before deployment to Vietnam and the first place they returned upon coming home.
The 2026 parade carried special meaning, offering a long-overdue welcome home to many Vietnam veterans who did not receive such recognition upon their return more than 50 years ago.
Representing the American Legion Department of Hawaii were Commander Mark DeVirgilio and his wife Irene, along with American Legion Auxiliary Department President Fran Riddell, NEC representative of the Sons of The American Legion, Michelle Hoover (TAL Auxiliary), and CR Drumheller (NEC Hawaii/Senior Vice Commander), accompanied by their families.
We were joined by special guest Jerry Kurz (TAL PUFL), who traveled from Chicago and previously joined us in the 2024 parade. His continued involvement reflects the strong national camaraderie within the American Legion community.
Additional participants included U.S. Marines and their families from Marine Corps Base Kaneohe Bay, as well as members of the Pyramid Rock Young Marines led by LTCOL Ret John Digiovanni (TAL PUFL). Their presence contributed to a vibrant and spirited celebration along the parade route. “The parade was a joyful and meaningful experience for all involved,” said Drumheller. “It is an honor to stand together in recognition of our Vietnam veterans and ensure they receive the appreciation they have long deserved.”
Legionnaires interested in participating in future events, including the National Vietnam Veterans Day Parade or the Pearl Harbor Commemoration Parade, are encouraged to contact the American Legion Department of Hawaii in advance.
