For over 30 years, American Legion Post 346 of Neptune's color guard fires rifle volleys over the graves of veterans in local cemeteries in time for Memorial Day. These cemeteries include Wayside Methodist in Ocean; Mount Carmel Catholic, Chesed Shel Ames Hebrew, St. George Greek, Mount Prospect and Hamilton Methodist, all in Neptune; and St. Anne Catholic and Glendola Cemeteries in Wall.
Color Guard Captain Paul Hulse explains, "We do this in memory of our fallen comrades. They gave their all in defense of our country. The least we can do is honor them for the sacrifices. It's a distinct honor and privilege for us to do this every year. We are always looking for younger members to join our color guard. Some of us are getting along in years."
Post 346 is holding a ceremony and service in front of their post on Memorial Day Monday at 9 am. The public is invited. Post 346 will then march in the Neptune Memorial Day Parade, stepping off in front of the high school at 10 a.m. and proceeding to Ocean Grove.
