John J. Morris Post 62 honors Memorial Day

John J. Morris Post 62 - Peoria, AZ

As the rest of the nation did, John J. Morris Post 62 (Peoria, Ariz.) honored Memorial Day with several events. The program started with dozens of motorcycles rolling in. The chaplain gave the invocation followed by the arrival of the color guard and 21-gun salute. The flag was placed at half-mast during taps. Auxiliary Juniors led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Commander Singer gave remarks, followed by the Auxiliary, then the Riders, then the SAL. Following those, the chaplain gave the benediction and the color guard was dismissed. Everyone went inside out of the Arizona heat, and the post hosted the largest potluck dinner we have ever seen with the post providing hamburgers and hot dogs. As is a tradition at 62, the dessert table was absolutely amazing. After the meal the house-favorite band Reboot played music for the next four hours. An almost full house in the dining hall and social quarters made for lots of veterans sharing stories on lost brothers. At 3 p.m. the Auxiliary led a minute of silence in remembrance. It was the largest turnout for an event in the history of Post 62.

Dozens of ALR Riders rolled in to kick the event off.

ALR Assistant Director Larry Tank moved the whole audience in reading part of a speech by Gen. John F. Kelly about two Marines defending a barracks in Iraq. Tears flowed.

Food being set up for the potluck. Only your fault if you left hungry.

Information brochure that was distributed.

Wreath on display in social quarters.

Flag before being raised back up at noon. Honor and remembrance.
