On Memorial Day, May 25, 2026, American Legion Post OK28 held their annual Memorial Day ceremony at Tomari International Cemetery to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Tomari, also known as Tomari Ijin Bochi, is a cemetery located in Tomari, Naha City, Okinawa, Japan. It is a unique cemetery that serves as the final resting place for individuals from various countries and cultures. The cemetery contains the graves of foreign individuals from the 18th through early 20th centuries, and roughly 300 from the postwar period, mostly those of Americans killed in the Battle of Okinawa, Korean War or Vietnam War, or those regularly resident in Okinawa at the time of their death. The cemetery was destroyed in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa but was rebuilt by the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR) and the City of Naha, reopening on June 30, 1955. Members of Post OK28 monthly mowed and cleaned the cemetery.
