Combat photojournalist Meg Prior spoke at Post 30's July 2026 meeting in Edgefield, S.C., about her unique perspectives documenting the experiences of America's soldiers in Afghanistan. Though a civilian photographer and filmmaker with no military experience, she eventually accompanied U.S. troops on more than 650 combat missions over the course of a decade.
Her life-changing journey was launched after her co-worker casually mentioned a need to document the war in Afghanistan. A single call to the Fort Campbell, Ky., switchboard led to the public affairs office, and just three weeks later Prior was embedded alongside American troops for what she believed would be a three-week assignment, documenting their lives both on and off the battlefield.
Along the way, she interviewed thousands of servicemembers, captured photographs by the hundreds of thousands and recorded countless hours of video, becoming an eyewitness to the experiences of young Americans serving in a distant land.
The presentation, titled "Afghanistan: Outside the Wire," focused on life beyond the relative safety of military bases. Her photographs and videos showed soldiers on foot patrol through remote Afghan villages, boarding Army helicopters for combat missions, participating in humanitarian projects, honoring fallen comrades at memorial ceremonies, and intense meetings between U.S. military leaders and councils of influential village elders and government officials.
The images Prior captured became more than a record of war. They became lasting tributes to the soldiers she came to know, preserving moments that help others better understand the men and women who served in Afghanistan. Few civilians have witnessed war from such close range. Prior's photographs preserve the courage, sacrifice and humanity of the brave young Americans who served there.
