American Legion Tidewater Post 327 in Norfolk: A legacy of service and generosity

Norfolk, VA

The Tidewater post was established in 1947 and is the largest post in the Hampton Roads area and second-largest in the state.

On Friday, Dec. 6, Tidewater American Legion Post 327 in Norfolk wrapped up and was proud to announce its extraordinary contributions to the community in 2024. Through dedicated efforts and an unwavering commitment to service, the post has donated over $238,000 to more than 50 local charities, strengthening its role as a cornerstone of hope and support for the region.

In addition to their charitable giving, Tidewater Post 327 has made a profound impact on veterans and their families. The post’s VA-certified service officers have helped submit over 1,200 claims this year, ensuring veterans receive the benefits and care they have earned. Remarkably, this invaluable service is provided entirely free of charge, with no requirement for an American Legion membership. Service officers are available Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed holidays.

“This has been an incredible year for Tidewater Post 327,” said Derrick “DJ” Johnson, Post 327's commander. “Our mission is rooted in service to our community and our nation’s heroes. Every dollar we raise and every claim we assist with reflects our gratitude and commitment to making a difference.”

The $238,000 in donations has supported diverse causes, including initiatives for veterans’ well-being, youth programs, local shelters, Norfolk’s first responders and more. These efforts embody the values of The American Legion and reinforce its pledge to serve not only those who have served but also the broader community.

Tidewater Post 327 invites the public to join in its mission. Whether through volunteer opportunities, donations or simply spreading the word, everyone can play a part in creating a stronger community and honoring the sacrifices of our veterans.
