A book about 1st Lt. Eric Fisher Wood Jr. from Bedford, Pa., has just been published entitled "I Guess I'll Start My Own War. A Personal Crusade for Freedom, 80th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge," by author Hugh Roberts.
Wood was the son of one of the founders of The American Legion, Brig. Gen. Eric Fisher Wood Sr., who designed the Legion emblem.
On Dec. 17, 1944, Wood Jr. was serving as executive officer of Battery A, 589th Field Artillery Battalion, 106th Infantry Division, deep in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium. He showed great courage and resourcefulness during some of the fiercest fighting of the war. He was a graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, Class of 1937, and Princeton University, Class of 1942.
