Three World War II veterans from Post 2 honored

Bristol, CT

On May 19, the State of Connecticut held a Living World War II Veterans Recognition Day at the State Armory in Hartford. Some 70 World War II veterans from across the state attended. Many were members of The American Legion. They range in age from 98 to 104. The event was hosted by the lieutenant governor. Three WWII veterans present were from Post 2.
After opening the ceremony, the governor and lieutenant governor addressed the veterans, followed by consuls from France and the UK, addressing those present and thanking them for their help freeing their countries during the war.
After all the speeches the lieutenant governor walked through the hall pinning a medal on each male and female servicemember.
Alongside her was the French consul presenting a certificate of thanks from her country. Following her was the British consul personally thanking each and every veteran. The Connecticut Veterans Affairs commissioner, working with the commander of the Connecticut National Guard thanked each and every WWII veteran for their service.
Joe Caminiti was able to update the governor on his trip to Iwoto to take part in the "Reunion of Honor" ceremony and his time on Iwo Jima during the battle some 80 years ago. The governor highlighted Joe's time there in his address.
Dick Fitz addressed the hall about his time during the war.
On display were Caminiti's and Fitz's painting by an artist, along with items donated to the World War II Legacy Foundation by both. They stood with the mayor of their hometown of Bristol; a number of Bristol's lawmakers were in attendance.
Two other World War II veterans from Post 2 were injured that morning and were unable to attend. Efforts are being made to get their certificates and medals to them.
