Allen “Pop” Reeves American Legion Post 123's community activities include Zumba and sponsoring a community boxing team. Zumba is provided twice a week at the post to promote good health and fun, and Legion Boxing helps the community with youth activities.
Zumba:
The post's outdoor foyer is open two mornings a week for a community Zumba class. It is a regular group of wives and community members who exercise for about 90 minutes. The course is free for all who choose to participate. The participants pay no fees as all is covered by the post.
Boxing:
The post sponsors a team in conjunction with a local gym. We negotiated free instruction and a reduced rate for the athletes to use the facilities. The boxers’ range in age from a 13-year-old female to a 24-year-old male; most members are in the 16-to-18-year range. The post provides basic equipment (gloves, headgear, hand wraps, etc.), and also pays for entry fees, transportation to events, and sometimes overnight accommodation and meals.
The post also helps local gyms (including where we train) host events by funding awards, judges and ring girls. The photo of the post included athletes, ring girls, a few parents who act as chaperones, and the local post commander.
