LTC Kelly sharing his experiences from a youth in Sitka, Alaska, to a commander of troops for the US Army

Hometown hero returns home and shares his story, from remote island life in Alaska to a commander of troops

Sitka, AK

This week, our community had the privilege of welcoming Lt. Col. Eric E. Kelly, U.S. Army, back home to Sitka. A proud Sitka High School graduate, LTC Kelly has gone on to become an exceptional leader in the Army, commanding soldiers around the world while never forgetting where his journey began.

What made this gathering so meaningful was not just hearing about military service, it was hearing from someone who once walked the same halls, lived on the same remote Alaskan island, and faced many of the same challenges our local youth experience today. His story demonstrated that great leaders can come from small communities and that determination, character and service can open doors to incredible opportunities.

LTC Kelly openly shared the triumphs, challenges and lessons he has learned throughout his military career. His honesty about leadership, responsibility and perseverance provided invaluable insight for those considering military service, while also offering a heartfelt look back for those who knew him during his younger years in Sitka.

Events like this are exactly why community engagement matters. They inspire the next generation, strengthen the bond between our military and our hometown, and remind us that extraordinary achievements often begin in ordinary places. For our young people, LTC Kelly's journey showed that no dream is too ambitious, regardless of where you come from. For the rest of us, it was a proud reminder that Sitka continues to produce men and women who answer the call to serve with honor.

American Legion Post 13 extends its sincere gratitude to LTC Eric E. Kelly for taking the time to return home, share his experiences and invest in the future of our community. Your leadership, humility and willingness to mentor others exemplify the very best of military service and embody the values we strive to uphold every day.
