SUNBURY, Ohio — The local upground reservoirs came alive with excitement as area youth gathered for a day of outdoor education, friendly competition and community spirit at the annual Terry Hummel Memorial Youth Fishing Derby. hosted at Colonel Benson Hough American Legion Post 457, the collaborative event brought together several local organizations to mentor the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
The event was a massive teamwork effort, drawing vital hands-on support from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife, Scouting America Pack and Troop 701, and local youth fishing team Hartley's Hawgs.
"It really takes a village to pull off an event of this scale," said Post 457 Commander Richard Day. "Seeing the veterans, the wildlife officers, the Scouts and local families all interacting on the water is exactly what community is all about."
The day kicked off inside the American Legion Hall at 230 Otis St., where participants registered and took part in interactive educational stations before walking the short hike to the upland reservoirs. ODNR wildlife officers were stationed alongside their official vehicles, passing out free educational literature, while inside the post derby staff distributed wildlife gear and fishing tackle with bright bobbers to eager children. At the same time, Scouting America leaders managed a dedicated Cub Scouts activity station, welcoming new families interested in year-round outdoor adventures.
Before hitting the water, the young anglers visited a live bait station managed by dedicated American Legion volunteers. Complete with a soil box full of live worms donated by the Cheshire Market, and a healthy dose of good-natured humor, the veterans ensured every child left for the shoreline fully equipped for success.
The action then shifted to the scenic banks and walking paths of the Sunbury upground reservoirs. A specially constructed floating fishing dock provided the perfect vantage point for the children, allowing them to cast their lines into deeper waters. For many participants, the day brought the unforgettable milestone of reeling in their very first catch.
Throughout the morning, volunteers kept energy levels high by serving fresh hot dogs donated by Big Walnut Grill.
