Each year, Chapter 233 of the Vietnam Veterans Association holds a 24 Vigil at the Metuchen Veterans Memorial Park, located in Metuchen, N.J.
Once every hour there is a reading of the name of a New Jersey servicemember, their hometown, date of birth and the last time they were seen alive by their comrades during armed conflict.
A symbolic dog tag is sponsored by a guest and hung from the roof inside a bamboo cage to signify their captivity. A hand salute is rendered and the process is repeated. A candle is lit in their memory in hope they may return before the flame burns out.
This traditional display has been performed for decades, and our Vietnam veterans' numbers are rapidly declining. We need to take time to visit and listen to their stories before their voices are gone.
