MERCHANTVILLE, N.J. — 10/18/26
Veterans, family, friends and American Legion Family members gathered in Merchantville, N.J., to dedicate a memorial marker honoring Sarge - the beloved service dog of John Brouse - whose remarkable legacy continues to inspire veterans across the nation.
Sarge passed away in 2025 following a battle with cancer. More than a service dog, he was John's lifeline, helping him through some of his darkest moments while providing healing, hope and renewed purpose.
The ceremony welcomed distinguished guests from New Jersey, including Department Commander Anthony "Tony" Gladden, and Maryland, including Department Commander Eric V. Warthen Sr.
Speakers reflected on Sarge's remarkable accomplishments, including advocacy for disabled veterans and New Jersey's proposed disabled license plate legislation, affectionately called "Sarge's Bill."
Gladden described Sarge as "the heart of his Legion Family."
Perhaps Sarge's greatest legacy is Buddy Check Thursday, started by John and Sarge in 2023. What began as a simple Facebook post asking, "Buddy Check, how are you doing?" grew into weekly videos encouraging veterans to connect. Warthen introduced the concept in Maryland, helping it expand across The American Legion nationwide. John and Sarge also inspired Maryland's annual PTSD Awareness Walk, now held at Dundalk Post 38.
Warthen, who attended the 2023 National American Legion College with John and Sarge, recalled helping Sarge receive his own diploma as the class's "Top Dog."
"This marker isn't just about remembering what Sarge did. It's about reminding us of what we still have to do," Warthen remarked.
The Maryland delegation presented John with commemorative gifts honoring Sarge and Malta, his new service dog. Following difficult months after Sarge's passing, Malta brought renewed companionship and hope. Many lovingly believe Sarge helped bring them together.
The dedication celebrated not simply a service dog, but a cherished family member whose influence reached far beyond New Jersey.
Sarge's mission continues through John, Malta and countless Legion Family members committed to ensuring no veteran walks alone.
As John and Sarge often reminded everyone, and John and Malta continue sharing today:
Whatever struggles you're dealing with, whatever you're going through, you don't have to walk that path alone.
Embrace the suck. Don't forget to smile.
And most importantly, TOMORROW NEEDS YOU.
