A shared moment: veterans still serving in the autumn of life

Liberty, MO

Some occasions call for solemn remembrance. Others bring communities together in celebration. For members of The American Legion, both reflect a continuing commitment to service.

On Sept. 26, 2026, crowds lined Kansas Street in Historic Downtown Liberty, Mo., for the 49th Annual Liberty Fall Festival Parade.

Among the veterans aboard the Robert H. Baker American Legion Post 95 float was William "Bud" Taylor. Directly behind him was fellow Legionnaire Paul Ellison, with Mike Edwards behind and to Bud's left. All three are members of Post 95.

As flags waved and the crowd celebrated, Bud's calm expression and steady gaze offered a quiet moment amid the excitement. Yet the photograph represents something greater than any one individual. It reflects the shared experience, fellowship and enduring commitment of the veterans aboard that float and the American Legion community they represent.

The three members alone represent 85 years of continuous Legion membership, a testament to the lasting bonds formed through service. Like the changing seasons, the autumn of life brings years of memories and experiences, but also opportunities to continue making a difference.

Whether participating in hometown celebrations, attending patriotic ceremonies or honoring fellow veterans, members of Post 95 continue a tradition shared by Legionnaires across the country.

It was a moment captured on an autumn afternoon in Liberty, reflecting a lifetime of service and a spirit of commitment that extends to veterans everywhere.
