Oscoda (Mich.) American Legion Post 274 sponsors a unique summer STEM program. The post charters two Boy Scout units. They brought Venturing Crew 7 on line in early 2018, and the next year they brought Troop 7G, a Scouts BSA troop for girls, into being. These units were nice support for the local Scouting program which had a Boys Troop sponsored by the local Methodist Church for decades. Now Scouting wasn't just for young men, it was expanded to serve young women too, and older youth.

The Legion units attained national recognition in 2001 when Flying Magazine and Bryan on Scouting recognized their unique STEM aviation program held for seven weeks each summer at the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Community Airport (formerly Wurtsmith AFB).

Each summer, up to six Scouts are selected from applicants to learn how to maintain a real airplane. The Scouts spend their summer learning under the tutelage of licensed mechanics and aviation subspecialists as they rebuild a Cessna 150 aircraft from scratch .

Please see the articles in Flying and Bryan on Scouting at the https:// above for detailed information. The program is free to youth accepted into the Scout Aviation Maintenance Experience (SAME). The program is expensive and is funded completely by donations. In addition to local Scouts from Michigan, SAME has attracted Scouts from as far away as Maryland, New York, Ohio, Nevada, and a transplant from the People's Republic of China who attends school in the United States and joined the Boy Scouts of America.
