During a recent initiation ceremony at Chula Vista Elks Lodge #2011, attendees witnessed a moment that spoke to the very heart of the Elks’ mission - service, compassion and community.
Lobo Baiza, a dedicated service support dog, was officially recognized for his loyal service to veteran Matthew Baiza, a proud member of the Wounded Warrior community. The Lodge presented Lobo with a special “Companion of an Elk” identification card, a symbolic gesture of gratitude and inclusion within the Elks family. The card, issued and signed by Laurie Ayala, PER, represents not just fellowship but recognition of the vital bond between veterans and their service animals.
As the ceremony unfolded, Lodge members looked on with quiet awe. Many had never before witnessed a service dog at work - and they watched with deep respect as Lobo subtly and skillfully assisted his master throughout the proceedings. From maintaining calm in a bustling room to responding to Matthew’s cues with precision and focus, Lobo’s presence was a powerful reminder of the unseen strength that service dogs provide to those who have given so much for their country.
“Our veterans rely on the support of their brothers, sisters - and, sometimes, their four-legged friends,” Ayala shared during the presentation. “Lobo embodies the spirit of loyalty and devotion that every Elk strives to live by.”
Trained to assist with balance, anxiety response and mobility, Lobo helps Matthew navigate daily life with renewed confidence and independence. Whether accompanying him to Lodge meetings, community events or volunteer efforts, Lobo’s steadfast service demonstrates the healing power of partnership.
During the event, Lobo was also presented with a commemorative pin by Exalted Ruler Bernard Gonzales and Past Exalted Rulers Laurie Ayala and Claudia Ayala, adding a special touch to the heartfelt recognition.
As the ceremony concluded, the room filled with heartfelt applause - both for the newly initiated Elks members and for Lobo, whose quiet dignity and devotion had captured everyone’s admiration. His new 2025–2026 Elks identification card, adorned with gold stars and a “New Member” emblem, now symbolizes both gratitude and belonging.
“This recognition isn’t just for Lobo,” Matthew said afterward. “It’s for every veteran whose life has been changed by a loyal companion who never quits on them.”
