Local business owner and volunteer firefighter Craig Scott is no stranger to veterans; his father served honorably. As a community member he saw that a local post was struggling with upkeep in their building. He contacted the post commander asking if he could help. Rutherford, N.J., is the Borough of Trees, and the trees had wreaked havoc on the 100-year-old sewer line out to the street. It required regular maintenance just to keep it clear. Craig owns Jersey Drains in Rutherford, so this was good timing.
Craig had the line inspected by camera and saw the issues. An outside catchment could help clear the line without needing access to the building, but there may be another solution.
A few days later, Craig and the commander spoke, and Craig suggested a new line would be best as it would rectify the problem instead of just making it easier to keep coming back. In fact, he was going to gift it to the post. This was an incredible act of generosity.
They established a day for the work; Craig brought in his team and it was done the same day. A new line ensures generations of Legionnaires would not be faced with that problem again and could concentrate on bringing needed services to veterans. Having learned of Craig’s legacy, the post made him a lifetime member of the Sons of The American Legion.
Community involvement comes easily in Rutherford; we act as partners and full stakeholders in the borough. Neighbors are like family, it truly takes a village, or in this case, a borough.
Thanks, Craig - Keith
