Freedom's Call

Freedom’s Call

By Michael Haas

Built upon a desire
Stoked through misrule.
Freedom calls up a wildfire
Regaling for overrule.

Our freedom has a cost
One we've paid for centuries.
So many lives were lost
It’s time we jog our memories.

While Freedom's call
Gave rights to all.
The costs are borne
By those who've mourned.

Our rights are many
With some being tested.
Freedom of speech, more than any
One we're fully vested.

Thought as a simple right
One that can infringe on others.
For it so many did fight
Dying to defend it, for one another.

Coupled with the right to assemble
In so many parts of the world denied.
Thank those who fought and trembled
To ensure this right was applied.

The freedom to choose
Deemed inalienable, lit the fuse.
Giving us a right to decide
Protecting our freedom being relied.

It was freedom’s call
That started it all.
Protecting our rights true
Trampling lives and rights of many, in queue.

Never forget what freedom’s call
Gave us, one and all.
Yet it isn’t free, its costs are high
Its protection won’t be denied.

Freedom’s call is for all mankind
It sounds around the world.
It’s easy to be infringed in-kind
For so few will it be unfurled.
