Every month John J Morris Post 62 honors a veteran for the month that has moved on to Post Everlasting with a flag that is donated by their family. The Post proudly flies the that flag on the flagpole outside the building for all to see. To begin the service, the riders conduct a "ride in". The month of September, John J Morris honored Ira H Hayes for his contribution as a Marine for the conflict of WWII. On this day, the riders definitely showed up.
Hayes was an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community, located in Pinal and Maricopa counties in Arizona. Hayes was one of the six men who appeared in the iconic photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by photographer Joe Rosenthal.
American Legion members of the Ira H. Hayes Post 84 located in Scanton AZ attended the day's service for the veteran of the month.
With TV crews also on location, this month's service for this veteran is one that deserves recognition and so do the riders. We escorted the Ira H Hayes post members and family with 3 motorcycles flying flags, the Arizona State ALR Chairman, Larry Tank riding and over 20 motorcycles. The service was exceptional with a beautiful speech by the post's commander, Noah McMullen. A lunch and social followed the service.
