The USA 250 Challenge caught my attention as I plowed through 60+ messages. As I read the information included in the message from our national commander, I said to myself, "Wow, this is something I could do to support the impact of The American Legion as we honor our nation's 250th birthday." 250 miles seems like a huge undertaking, but I shoot for 5 miles a day, as I like to walk for exercise. I also noticed the community component and believe strongly in supporting my town's initiatives.
I've been an American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) member for 72 years. Presently, I serve as the National Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation chair and am the leading candidate for National Vice President for 2026-2027. As an ALA member since soon after my birth, I traveled with my parents from a very young age to American Legion events. I learned the importance of supporting veterans, military, spouses/families and my community. This opportunity fits right in with my priorities and being a dedicated ALA member.
It is important for American Legion Family members to be involved within their communities. Our neighbors see us involved every day. We never ask for kudos and often are very silent about what we do for others. Walking 250 miles, with or without others, demonstrates a commitment to not only my health but my community. Participating in community events and activities, while wearing my branded clothing, demonstrates to others who we are and what we do. We definitely know it matters!
