On Saturday, April 25, John J. Morris Post 62 (Peoria, Ariz.) hosted the spring Guitars 4 Vets Phoenix graduation! Only available for veterans and with a focus on PTSD, there is no charge for the 12 weeks of training, and they must prove their knowledge before graduating. The guitar lessons are great, but the relationships between instructors and classmates are lifelong friendships. The spring class graduated eight students, including two members of Post 62. Graduation started with everyone in social quarters standing and singing the national anthem, followed by the students performing four songs. The presentation included each student getting a new special-version guitar pick, their graduation certificate, logo T-shirts and a brand-new guitar. They also got gift certificates to Guitar Center. Rocky Rice from Post 62 stated, "I loved it. It has brought my love for the guitar back and has really helped with my PTSD and mental health. I highly recommend the class." Luis Marquez, also from Post 62, stated, "Great experience! Get out of your comfort zone and try something new! Thank you so much to the instructors and Post 62 for hosting the classes. Best post I have ever been in!" Luis walked into Post 62 for the first time last year and has transferred from his previous post in Wisconsin. Following everything with the students, the leaders of Guitars 4 Vets Phoenix called up Post Commander Bob Singer and Auxiliary Past President Kathy Amery and presented the post with a custom-made guitar signed by all instructors and personalized to Post 62. Plans are to hang the guitar on the wall on back of the stage for all to see in the future. They will return in the fall for another round of classes with new students. We salute all the students and the Guitars 4 Vets Phoenix group for the service they are providing veterans!
