The Department of Arizona is encouraging other posts around the state to adopt a Veteran of the Month program similar to what Post 62 is doing. Past Post Commander John Murnan kicked off the idea of the program. As the years have gone by it continues to grow in popularity. At this time, they already have all of next year reserved! Every November is the Unknown Soldier, and starting in 2027 every February will be Marine Ira Hayes of Iwo Jima fame. Members of the post nominate fallen relatives for the honor. On the first of every month, the Riders roll in and line up in front of the flag before the honor guard comes out to lower the previous month's flag and present to the family if possible, then raise the new one for the next veteran of the month. The post commander reads the story of the new veteran, which is highly researched by the chaplain. What this means to families is amazing. Often other relatives from around the country fly in to have their relative honored. It can be a spouse, parent or grandparent. It is a simple, inexpensive way to honor veterans now in Post Everlasting. It would be great to see more posts around the state look into picking up this program. It is a program that honors our heroes who supported our country!
